- General Information
- The main purpose of the Department is to carry out the Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution Course, which is one of the compulsory common courses to be taught in the first years of our University in accordance with Article 5/i of the Higher Education Law No. 2547. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the training of the students of our university as good citizens who are useful to their country in line with the Kemalist Thought System and Atatürk's principles and revolutions. In addition, Atatürk's thought, Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions to research, disseminate and promote scientific ways to organise conferences, seminars and panels and scientific publications are among the objectives of the Department.
- Course Objectives
- The aim of Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution courses is to raise new generations who will comprehend and develop the spirit and goals of the Turkish Revolution. Thus, as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said; "Those who have grasped the purpose of the revolution will have the power to protect it continuously".
- In order to comprehend the purpose of the revolution, it is necessary to provide accurate information about the Turkish War of Independence, Atatürk's Revolutions, Atatürk's System of Thought and the History of the Republic of Turkey, and to educate the Turkish Youth in line with the Atatürkist Thought System. Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution course has undertaken this task. Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution courses are of indispensable importance for the continuity of the Republican regime, the creation of new institutions, the dissemination and development of the Kemalist Thought System and the modernisation of our nation. In this context, the following can be said about the aims and objectives of the course.
- a) a) To provide accurate information about the conditions of the National Struggle, the stages of the Turkish National Struggle, the History of the Republic of Turkey, Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions and the Kemalist Thought System.
- b) To ensure that Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions are understood correctly and to create awareness in young people to defend and develop these revolutions and principles.
- c) To teach new generations that the Republic of Turkey with its State, Nation and Country is an indivisible whole and to ensure the integration of Turkish Youth within this ideal.
- d) To give accurate information about the Republic of Turkey and Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions, threats to Kemalist thought.
- Course History
- Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolutions, which is taught in all Turkish universities today, is a course that has been taught since the first years of the Republic with the directive given by Atatürk himself. For the first time in 1925, Mahmut Esat Bozkurt gave lectures under the title "History of Revolutions" at the Ankara Law School of Justice in 1925; he explained the characteristics of the Turkish Revolution and analysed the Turkish Revolution comparatively with other revolutionary movements. With the aim of bringing the Republican regime to the people and getting them to adopt the revolutions, it was thought that the History of Revolutions courses would be given more comprehensively from the 1930s onwards. These courses, which were carried out within the scope of the newly formed history thesis and the university reform, gained a new momentum with the establishment of an Institute of History of Revolution at Istanbul University and the Chair of Revolution under the Faculty of Law in Ankara. According to the first draft prepared by Reşid Galip, those who would teach this course had to be "Turkish". This decision was undoubtedly influenced by the betrayals in the last days of the Ottoman Empire.
According to the initial preparations, the Institute's courses were planned to be given in four sections. Recep Peker was to lecture on military and domestic political issues, Mahmud Esad Bozkurt on law, Yusuf Hikmet Bayur on foreign policy and Yusuf Kemal Tengirşek on economics. According to this plan, Yusuf Hikmet Bayur, the then Deputy Minister of Education, started lecturing in Istanbul on 4 March 1934, Mahmud Esat Bozkurt in Ankara on 8 March 1934 and Yusuf Kemal Tengirşek in Istanbul on 12 March 1934. The lectures on military and domestic political issues started with the lecture of Prime Minister İsmet İnönü on 20 March 1934 at the Ankara Public House, and Recep Peker continued the lectures afterwards. The lectures were also broadcast on the radio and in newspapers to reach a wider audience.
The responsibility of the Turkish Revolution History course was given to the "Turkish Revolution History Institute", which was established under the Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography with the Law No. 4204 adopted on 15 April 1942. The name of the course was changed to "History of Turkish Revolution and the Regime of the Republic of Turkey" and it became a compulsory course in faculties and colleges.
After the 27 May 1960 revolution, a number of changes were made in the content of the course and it was decided to teach the course for two semesters in faculties and one year in colleges. On 20 March 1968, with the decision of the advisory board of the Turkish Revolution History Institute, the name of the course was changed to "Turkish Revolution History". On 1 February 1971, the same Institute prepared a new draft law in order to reorganise the purpose, quality and characteristics of the History of Revolution course and to make this course more efficient.
After the 12 September 1980 revolution, the name of the course was changed again to "Atatürk's Principles and History of Revolution" and in the meantime, some changes were made in the content of the course and a textbook was prepared within the framework of new principles. Then, in accordance with Articles 4 and 5 of the Higher Education Institution Law No. 2547 dated 6 November 1981, it was accepted to be a compulsory course to be taught in all Higher Education Institutions during all education and training. In 1990, the duration of the course was reduced again to one academic year.
